1. Bonbon Bakery, Berry Street
Already a steadfast favourite within Liverpool, and having acquired a highly dedicated customer base, the Bonbon Bakery has done well for a relative newcomer to the culinary scene in Merseyside. It offers a unique blend of a bakery and Chinese restaurant, so as well as various cakes and buns and muffins of all colours, shapes and types, you can also get some classic Anglo-Chinese cooking in there as well.
The staff are friendly, the food is great, and the atmosphere welcoming. While their custard tarts and bakewells are fantastic, don’t miss out on their char siu buns either!
2. Etsu, The Strand
Continuing our East Asian theme, Etsu is a well-established Japanese restaurant with 70 years in the business and it really shows. All the chefs are highly trained in Japanese cuisine, the presentation is professional and tasteful, and the food is beyond delicious. Whether you want a bento box, Japanese curry, udon noodles, ramen, or sushi, Etsu can provide. If you or your grandparents are a fan of Asian cuisine, you’d be doing yourselves a disservice not to check into this gem on The Strand.

3. Zorbas, Leece Street
Tucked within the modern architecture of 21st century Liverpool, Zorbas proudly sticks to its roots and origins as a Greek-Cypriot restaurant founded in 1974. It offers, in its own words, “non-pretentious” and “down-to-earth” Hellenic cuisine that has been passed down by the owners from within the family for generations.
The food subsequently is traditional, and anyone in the family of Greek or Cypriot heritage may find the restaurant highly nostalgic. The food is completely authentic, as one would expect for a restaurant run by a Hellenic family, and the atmosphere is honest and traditional. Its food is also paired with some very carefully chosen red and white wines for the perfect accompaniment to your meals.
4. The London Carriage Works, Hope Street
For those looking for something with a little more fine dining involved, step into the parlour of the multi-award winning London Carriage Works. Set within a gorgeous Victorian structure, and drawing its produce from across the North West of England, the London Carriage Works is a great place for a quiet and refined evening meal, or perhaps as a quick rest with some afternoon tea.
The London Carriage Works also has the advantage of being surrounded by some of Liverpool’s finest establishments. It sits just opposite the Hope Street Hotel, and is in easy access of the Philharmonic Hall and Everyman Theatre. As such it’s a great place to retreat to after a long and exciting evening of entertainment in the city.
5. Bistro Pierre, Matthew Street
We finish off today we a taste from the Continent, and stop into the Bistro Pierre. Quiet, cosy, and simple with scrubbed wooden tables and chairs, it calls to mind the same sleepy Gallic cafes that populate cities across France. It makes the perfect place for you to take your grandparents for a quick Continental breakfast or a light lunch, and carries with it plenty of charm.
Its strength is not just in its aesthetics either. The food is authentically French, freshly made, and the menu changes frequently so that there’s always something season to enjoy.
