There is much to do and see in Bolton, enough to fill several articles if we had the time. For now however, for the sake of focus, we’ll be taking a more gastronomical look at this Greater Manchester town. If you’re ever spending the day here with your grandparents, you’ll be quite satisfied with the wide array of establishments to stop for lunch.
Here are five locations we think will be of particular interest to you and your grandparents when you’re looking for a break from the museums, shops and galleries of the town.
Cafe Italia Bolton
We’re starting off our diners’ tour of Bolton at Café Italia Bolton, because one can never go wrong with a good Italian. And rest assured, Café Italia Bolton is a good Italian restaurant.
Found on Moss Bank Way, the cafe is a family run business that specialises in both light lunches and more elaborate evening meals. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and the service friendly and of very high quality. The same can also be said of the food, with Café Italia Bolton offering a wide array of classic Italian dishes, as well as an Italian twist on the traditional British afternoon tea.
If you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, you’ll find it perfectly suited to older family members. Whether they’re looking for a light sandwich or a heartier pasta dish, there’s definitely plenty for them to enjoy here.
The Black Bull
Sometimes your grandparents will just want something nice and traditional, and that’s perfectly fine. Bolton has you covered. Our choice today is The Black Bull, a traditional English pub found just a few miles north of Bolton proper. It’s an ideal choice if you want a break from the town and to explore the surrounding countryside.
Pop inside for a cold drink and a home cooked meal, as the Black Bull offers all as well as fantastic views of the northern English countryside. The pub is warm, friendly and easily accessible.
Baker’s
Moving back into the town proper, Baker’s is a classic British cafe-cum-coffee shop that offers the usual array of lunches, hot drinks, sandwiches and cakes. Found on Blackburn Road, the building is bright, quirky and welcoming.
The cafe is exceptionally good at catering to a wide array of customers, and can provide anything from tea and nibbles, to cooked meals, to alcohol. It’s a fantastic place to stop in and grab a bite to eat while out exploring the rest of the town. All food is fresh, expertly prepared, and offers great value for money.
Nkono
We’ll be looking at something a little more unusual here, a fantastic spot if your grandparents are the types who dislike going somewhere new but doing things that are overly familiar.
Nkono, of Bolton Market Hall, is one of the very rare places that specialises in African cuisine, and all too overlooked tradition of cooking that is only just making an appearance here in Britain. You and your grandparents will quickly come to appreciate just how unfortunate this is, as Nkono presents to its visitors some fantastic meals. Everything is cooked with love and passion, and the owner himself is very personable and enthusiastic about what he does.
Nkono offers great Cameroonian food with a very personable touch. Your grandparents will be blown away by the generous portions, friendly service and beautifully cooked ingredients fresh from the stall.
Poppins Tea Rooms at Smithills Hall
We finish off our article today with a more classical approach to the English lunchtime.
Poppins Tea Rooms, found in Smithills Hall, presents a Victorian afternoon tea in an exquisite historical setting. Take your grandparents here if they like things with a traditional twist and a taste for the delicate. The teas are all high quality, the cakes are home made, and the atmosphere is exceptionally classy.
Your grandparents will also greatly enjoy the venue, as Smithills Hall is a very venerable building with a rich history to it. It’s one of England’s best preserved country manor houses, and can form a great part of an afternoon outing in itself. Be sure to ask your waiter or waitress for the story, and you’ll come to appreciate your meal even further.
The tea room is rather popular and can get particularly busy depending on the time of day, week, or year. If you’re planning on adding Poppins Tea Rooms to your day out, make sure you reserve a table ahead of time.
